The Lanikai Pillbox Hike is located on the windward side of Oahu, near Kailua, in the neighborhood of Lanikai. This hike has become extremely popular due to the amazing views of the surrounding beaches, turquoise ocean, lush green mountains and it is a relatively short hike. However, just because it is short doesn’t equal easy. This is a steep hike with loose gravel and rock face scrabbling. Where Is The Pillbox Hike Trailhead?
The actual starting point is on the corner of Kaelepulu Drive and an unnamed residential street. You will see a dirt corner and a few small signs where the trailhead begins. Read our trailhead guide for all of the details.
How Difficult Is The Lanikai Pillbox Hike?
Contrary to popular opinions, this is not an easy hike. Many websites report this hike as being easy, it is not easy. We grade this hike as medium difficulty. See here for more information about the Pillbox Hike difficulty and what can be expected on the trail.
There are steep, loose gravel, and slippery rock sections. There is a rope to assist you in the lower section that is kind of a steep dirt trail. Wear good shoes with good traction or hiking boots. Bring plenty of water. There’s no shade or drinking fountains.
How Much Time Does It Take To Hike To The Pillboxes?
It takes around 1 hour round trip. You can make it from the trailhead to the 1st pillbox in about 20 minutes. Then another 10 minutes up the trail to the 2nd pillbox.
Can I Park My Car Near The Pillbox Trailhead?
No, there are no dedicated parking spots available right at the trailhead. There is very limited street parking down the street, but most people have to park at Kailua Beach. See all of the details for the best places to park.
Does The Pillbox Hike Have Any Facilities?
There are no facilities such as restrooms or drinking fountains available on the hike. The closest is about a 15-20 minute walk to Kailua Beach Park.
How Long Is Lanikai Pillbox Hike?
The full hike out-and-back is about 1.5 miles from the Lanikai side and 1.7 miles from the Enchanted Lakes side, also known as the back way.
What Hours Is The Pillbox Hike Open?
The hike is open sunrise to sunset. As one of the best places to see the sunrise on Oahu, many people get up early to get to the top for the beautiful sunrise. Make sure to bring a flashlight if you will be hiking in the dark.
What Seasons Is The Hike Open?
The hike is open all 12 months. There are no seasonal closures.
Can I Hike In Slippahs (Flip-Flops)?
No, we recommend wearing shoes with good traction or hiking boots. It is easy to slip and even fall on this hike without proper footwear.
Are Dogs Allowed On The Pillbox Hike?
Yes, and must be on a leash and cleaned up after.

The hiking trail goes up a ridge overlooking two suburbs of Kailua, Lanikai to the East and Enchanted Lakes to the West. This hike offers amazing 360-degree views in all directions, including the Mokulua Islands, Lanikai Beach, Kailua Bay, and the Ko’olau Mountains. Farther off in the distance, you can also see the Makapu’u Lighthouse, Waimanalo Bay, Kaneohe Bay, and Chinaman’s Hat.
The sunrises and sunsets are beautiful from the top of the hike. If you can’t do the hike in the morning or evening, don’t let that discourage you from the hike as any time will have amazing views. Lanikai Beach
Visit Lanikai Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. With blue waters reaching over to the two Mokulua Islands, the soft powdery sand, and the calm water, this beach is a must to visit. Great views, great swimming, and great snorkeling!
Kailua Beach
Kailua Beach is a close 2nd to Lanikai Beach. It has easier access with parking which is a big plus especially on busier days. There is also beautiful blue water, great views, good sand, snorkeling and swimming!
